Primary Health & SEWB

The Medical Practice includes General Practitioners, Aboriginal Health Workers, Nurses and Social and Emotional Wellbeing workers. Specialist services are attached to the Centre to help people with conditions endemic on Palm Island, such as for the treatment of diabetes and ocular health. The focus of the Centre is on child and maternal health, but through the provision of added services it also ensures that all Palm Islanders have access to a locally tailored and culturally relevant general-practice medical clinic. The Centre is also able to refer patients to needed services in Townsville. While there, patients can be transported to their appointments in a PICC transfer bus.

Stepped Care Service

The Stepped Care Service provides social and emotional wellbeing pathways and services to members of the community who have moderate mental health concerns. These pathways and services are tailored to the unique needs and wants of Palm Island. Some of its services and programs are delivered by the Mental Health Team.

The Mental Health Team is new in 2019. The Team is a central coordinating service for the range of mental health needs of all Palm Islanders. The Team works directly with its clients and across the range of services offered by PICC to ensure that Palm Islanders’ mental health is comprehensively managed. The Team can also refer clients to other services not provided by PICC.
