The purpose of the Palm Island Community Company Early Childhood, Parenting and Health & Wellbeing Project is to provide local level leadership, educational support as well as facilitate coordination efforts that deliver the necessary service responses at every stage of a child’s early childhood development pathway from birth through to their transition to school. The service will aim to improve the rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children reaching age appropriate developmental milestones and getting the best possible foundation for learning and life.

Palm Island Community Company Early Childhood, Parenting and Health & Wellbeing Project will work with all relevant service providers to ensure that all new parents are aware of the importance of early childhood health and development, including knowledge of developmental milestones for their child.

This project will ensure that parents know about the available services in the community that can provide information, support, health/developmental checks and advice. Ideally we would like all babies and children from birth to three to have a regular health and developmental checks including provision of immunisations; and are engaged in some form of early childhood education or development program such as Playgroup, Kindy or the HIPPY Program.

If health and or developmental issues are identified through regular checks, this project aims to facilitate the provision of an immediate and effective response. This will be achieved through services working collaboratively together to support the children and family through a family- centred model of coordinated case management which recognises the importance of working in partnership with the family.

We aim to increase parents’ awareness of developmental issues and confidence in accessing, planning and coordinating services to support their children and family.

Children that need additional support to transition to school will be assisted by this service through a school transition plan.
